Pen today, Phone tomorrow
Bridge is not the poor relation, Apple sold devices to women playing during lockdown - let's keep using them to bring bridge administration into the 21st century!
At IBEscore we are on a mission to eradicate pen and paper scoring from competitive bridge games.
Recycling paper is great, but saving paper by not supporting printing at all saves money, uses less water, conserves energy, and helps preserve adult trees.
It saves space making bridge venues infinitely more flexible as less storage space is needed.
It makes bridge look really amateur and behind the times - picture this reality - players really are using techno9lgy to submit their golf scores before they leave the 18th hole, viewing their standings on arrival, cleaning up and sitting down to play bridge, their phone at their side to check the football scores and news while someone writes unintelligible scores on a scrap of paper. Really!
It helps reduce blatant cheating - yes really players have been found guilty of changing scores before the data is collated post session. One player in England was even banned for changing scores using a one table one device scoring electrnoics.
Apple made billions selling iphones and ipads to folk during the pandemic and we have no doubt android suppliers did too. Many of those went to bridge players so they could play bridge. Every day we hear from someone who finds bridge on site boring now. At IBEScore we think a good reason for this is that players have become familiar with more information thanks to the abundance of statistics in online play. Let’s give players what they are used to now - rankings, comparisons and correction in real-time.
Volunteers are becoming thin on the ground. And deserve a break. Clubs who cannot afford professional Directors rely on volunteers giving up to two hours at the end of games to collect, collate, input and produce results each time a session is played. Actually the cost of a director can be saved entirely when players input their own scores, and can seek world class director support when things go wrong - all at the click of a button on their own phone.
6 good reasons to make a change in 2023 and switch from pen and paper to smart phone scoring.
Reduces the paper a bit. Getting back to the club means we are using cards again. In Jude’s post we get great tips for how to extend the life of cards. Check it out and do your bit to creating a clean, kind to the environment club.
